The long-anticipated first shipment of Moderna COVID-19 vaccines has finally arrived in the Philippines last Sunday night.

The shipment, containing 249,600 doses, has been unloaded at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 with 150,000 of it procured by the government, while 99,600 were purchased by private sectors, initiated by the International Container Terminal Services, Inc., and National Task Force Against COVID-19 (NTF).

NTF COVID-19 Chief Implementer and vaccine czar Sec. Carlito G. Galvez Jr. welcomes the arrival of Moderna vaccine.

Following the arrival of Coronavac doses developed by Chinese drug firm Sinovac BioTech earlier this month, Moderna's arrival in the country is the second shipment of vaccine with doses to be allocated to private sectors.

The total number of Moderna vaccine procurement that is expected to arrive within the year is estimated at 20 million doses where 13 million of it was acquired by the government and seven million by the private sectors.

The Philippines now has five vaccine brands available namely Moderna, Pfizer, Sinovac, Sputnik V, and AstraZeneca.
